Description
Ogimachi is a historic village in Shirakawa-go that is surrounded by mountains and divided by a river. Its main attraction is the cluster of traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old but still very well preserved. Their steep thatched roofs are designed to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in the alpine region during harsh winters. The Shiroyama Viewpoint is at north of the village center and offers scenic views of the village down below, with mountains as backdrop. These iconic farmhouses are best seen either submerged in snow or surrounded by luscious green fields. However, I prefer the moment before it is totally blanketed by snow as it offers better contrast for black and white image.
